Intent

At Easton our overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

At Easton we aim to teach our children to read easily, fluently and with good understanding and to develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. We will help children to acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.

We will set high expectations for children to appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage. At Easton our children will be taught to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. They will be encouraged to use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas. We would expect our children to leave Easton school to be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Implementation

We strive to inspire children to be writers for a purpose therefore the different key skills outlined for the different stages of the curriculum, are taught across the different subjects of the curriculum and also as static lessons. Consequently, the children find themselves experiencing language and writing through a range of mediums to inspire imaginative and inventive creations.
